Special visits Commandery Templars and Hospitallers

The Commandery of Mons in Varetz was occupied by the Templars from the 12th to the beginning of the 14th century then by the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Malta until the Revolution.
An estate that became private following the sale as national property during the Revolution and having belonged to a few families, this site was not open to visitors until 2023. Visiting these places therefore remains an exceptional opportunity following the opening authorizations by the new owner.
In addition, the visit continues to a place called La Chapelle, a site with red sandstone houses with a rich past.

10h30: Meet at the entrance to the commandery (Mandatory reservation)

- Guided tour (approximately 1 hour):
- Welcome in the commandery park, brief introduction to the history of the military religious orders (Templars & Hospitallers), history of the miraculous fountain, presentation of the organization of a commandery, description of the facade and its coats of arms, evocation of the missing parts.
- Continue through the interior of the commandery: its large fireplace, the commander’s bedroom, the cellars.
- Description of engraved and emblazoned stones, iconography of military orders.
Parking in the meadow on the right in front of the entrance to the commandery.
11:30 a.m.: departure by car for the place called La Chapelle, 3 km away.
- Discovery of an outbuilding of the commandery with its enigmatic chapel (around 30 minutes).
