Museum of Art and History of Brive-la-Gaillarde
The Labenche museum reveals the history of Brive and its region from its origins to the present day, through no less than 15 permanent exhibition rooms.
It is one of only two establishments holding the “Museum of France” designation (a guarantee of recognition of its scientific value by the State) in the Limousin region. It is therefore part of our top 14 visits.
Throughout the journey through time and history, around 5 500 items are revealed, they are all part of the 11 major thematic groups of the museum:
2 rooms of the museum are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, they are free! Currently: Curiosities!
The museum also organizes several exhibitions at the Chapelle Saint-Libérale in the city center: click here to the current exhibition.
The Hôtel Labenche was built around the middle of the 16th century, during the Renaissance, by a nobleman with local responsibilities granted by the King in terms of justice. Its title "De la Labenche" gives its name to the building and therefore, 5 centuries later to the eponymous museum.
It had several owners and several functions, in particular that of a minor seminary in the middle of the 19th century. Then classified as a historic monument in 1886, it ended up coming under the control of the town of Brive-la-Gaillarde at the beginning of the 20th century.
You who are eager for local history, what if you treat yourself with a tour of the Labenche museum? There you will find something to understand the area: from knowing all about accordion to the traditional tapestry manufacture in Aubusson. Just a tip for you: keep your eyes peeled, you'll be amazed. And it starts upon arrival, with the most beautiful Renaissance building in Brive. In addition, entry is free of charge every first Sunday of the month. So you no longer have any excuse not to venture there.
