Turenne's crazy week

Published on April 5, 2024 by Nicolas Thalman

1650-2023... After 374 years of waiting, come and take part in the third!

The owner of the Château de Turenne draws inspiration from the history of the village and in particular from a very festive period in its history (1650) to offer activities celebrating memorable festivals.

The festivities will take place May 18, 19 and 20, 2024.

What is Turenne's crazy week?

In May 1650 the rebellion raged in France. The great lords of the kingdom revolted against Mazarin and the regent Anne of Austria. The Prince of Condé, his brother and his brother-in-law are imprisoned by Mazarin at the Château de Vincennes.

Condé's wife, escorted by 2000 men, decides to go to Bordeaux to rally the parliament to her cause and raise an army. On the way they are welcomed in Turenne by Frédéric Maurice, Duke of Bouillon, brother of the great Turenne and ardent rebel.

For a week, while all the preparations to descend on Bordeaux without difficulty are put in place, the town of Turenne comes alive with the festivities offered to the great people of the kingdom.

The viscounty capital has not experienced such splendor since that date.

The story suggests that it will take several years for the Viscounty to recover from the expenses caused by what is today known as the Mad Week of Turenne.
