Guided tour of Brive, its history, its stories, its heritage

Brive has been a place of passage on the Corrèze since prehistoric times. The agglomeration which was created in the 5th century around the sanctuary of Saint Martin the Spaniard took advantage of this crossroads situation to develop. Fortified city at least since the 12th century, it knows how to play alliances with powerful neighboring lords and reversals of allegiance towards France and the Duke of Aquitaine (King of England). During a walk along these streets, you will discover beautiful Renaissance and classical architecture and the Saint-Martin collegiate church offers beautiful examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

Special visits Templar and Hospitaller Commandery (Varetz)

The commandery of Mons in Varetz was occupied by the Templars from the 12th to the beginning of the 14th century then by the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Malta until the Revolution.
An estate that became private following the sale as national property during the Revolution and having belonged to a few families, this site could not be visited until 2023. Visiting these places therefore remains an exceptional opportunity following the opening authorizations by the new owner.
In addition, the visit continues to a place called La Chapelle, a site with red sandstone houses with a rich past.

Turenne, a small peaceful village today, has been known since the 8th century when the troops of Pepin the Short attacked its castle. During the 10th century, it became the seat of a viscounty which, despite the Hundred Years' War and the wars of religion (Vicomte Henri I de la Tour d'Auvergne was one of the leading figures of the Protestant party), remained independent. of the Kingdom of France until 1738. This rich history can be discovered along the streets of this iconic white limestone village overlooked by the ruins of the castle from the top of their cliff.
